Drug Abuse

Drug abuse is one of the major concerns among the youth of Bhutan. As marijuana is freely growing in almost all parts of the country, the number of youths getting involved with substance abuse is increasing per annum. The government and Non Government Agencies (NGO’s) are putting in a lot of resources and efforts to tackle this problem. They are desperately trying to balance the development of the nation and safeguarding the country’s future youths.

The recent report from the National Drug Law Enforcement unit of the Royal Bhutan Police show that 86.7% of the total numbers of drug abusers from 2004 till 2008 were youth and more than 50% were students.

Many programs are being initiated all over the country to educate and spread the awareness of drug abuse. Rehabilitation centers are established to help the youths get free from drug addiction. Similar programs are conducted in schools as a peer counseling to help the youths and on world health day. Schools from all over Bhutan embark on the journey to uproot as much marijuana as they can in their locality. The problem of drug abuse may be at a large as of now in the long run, if the effort we put in remains unwavering then eventually it will subside.
